Discovering Manchester’s Historic Mill District: Where Mentis Makes Advanced Composites, Composite Radomes and More

More than 150 years ago, Manchester, New Hampshire was a thriving center of industry—a place where cotton, textiles and machinery were made to serve the state and growing country’s needs.

Today, Mentis Sciences sits at the heart of the city’s historic Mill District, whose exports may have changed with time, but whose hustle, bustle and exchange of ideas is as strong as ever. It’s where young scientists learn how to answer tomorrow’s big questions—and where we work hard to develop the advanced composites, composite radomes and other devices needed along the way.

Just read on to learn more about how our one-of-a-kind neighborhood has shaped more than a century’s worth of industrial innovations—including the ones Mentis Sciences proudly devises every day.

What’s in a name?

A large, looming clue to Manchester’s current reputation as an industrial leader can be found in its name, bestowed by one Samuel Blodgett.

Blodgett, an inventor with industrial aspirations, chose the name in the hopes that this early American city might mirror the success of Manchester, UK, by then a major manufacturing player and the world’s first true industrial city.

A thriving center of industry

Blodgett’s goal, of course, was achieved. From Manchester’s Mill District came textiles, machinery and cotton—lots of cotton. In fact, at one time, Manchester was home to the largest cotton mill in the world!

Mentis and Manchester today

Today, the famous brick buildings that defined Manchester’s early forays into the Industrial Revolution serve as reminders of our past—but even though this area may be known as the “historic” Mill District, our work is anything but antiquated. Many modern technology companies, Mentis among them, choose to call the Mill District “home” thanks to its strong reputation for industry innovation, its proximity to partners in our respective fields, and the enormous pool of talent to work with. In fact, Mentis Sciences was the first HUBZone-certified company in Manchester, and we work every day to share our knowledge and passion for science with our vibrant community and, with the help of our Mentis Internship Program, avid area STEM students.

We hope you have enjoyed this brief virtual tour of the industrial hub Mentis Sciences calls “home.” From leading defense organizations to young scientists at local schools, we strive to serve our community with the service, integrity and insights that have defined our work for more than 20 years.
